How to Remove Individual Lashes and Advise Proper Aftercare

Beauty Boss Academy Blog/Beauty/How to Remove Individual Lashes and Advise Proper Aftercare

Lash extensions are not permanent. They need regular maintenance to maintain the stunning look they had on day 1. Otherwise, your client will start to find they’re losing more lashes than expected or their style is losing its shape. To deal with this situation, you must perform follow-up procedures such as fill appointments and removals. And before any of that—proper aftercare advice.

Aftercare refers to the practices a lash client must religiously follow to maintain their extensions after the lash service. A fill appointment is when a lash technician examines and fixes or replaces a client's lash set. Doing either process improperly may shorten the life span of lash extensions or, worse, damage the client's natural lashes.

This is the last thing any lash artist wants to deal with. Before it happens to you and your clients, let's help you master the art of removing individual lashes and aftercare advice.

What to Do Before Removing Individual Lash Extensions

When a client books a fill appointment, you want to make the right decision whether to remove and replace the full set or just individual lashes—granting their request while protecting their health and safety.

Here's what you must do before deciding to remove lash extensions.

Examine the Condition of the Lashes

Your first task is to check the health of the client's natural lashes and lash set. Below are common lash issues you'll encounter during fill-ins.

1. Lash Stress — This manifests as huge lash gaps, twisting lash extensions, baby lashes, and bald spots on the lash line. It happens when the natural lashes can no longer support the weight of the extensions.
2. Lash Stickies — The lashes are forced to stick together and pull on each other as they grow out. These occur when the natural lashes aren't correctly isolated and may cause discomfort, pain, styes, and follicle damage.
3. Grown-Out Lashes — When the baby and teenage lashes grow fast, the lashes start to flip, and the lash set loses its shape.
4. 40% Rule — Your client should have 40% of their lash extensions left on their eyes for a fill appointment. If they have less than 40% remaining, the appointment should be considered a full set.

Remove the Client's Eye Makeup

The next step is removing your client's eye makeup. It eliminates the oil or wax residues that negatively affect the retention of the lash adhesive and gives you more time to focus on the lash application.

Pre-service lash cleansing involves the following lash tools:
• Water-based makeup remover
• Cleansing wands with no fibre
• Tissues
• Saline solution
• Foam lash shampoo

How to Remove Individual Eyelash Extensions

There are two ways to remove lash extensions: individual and full set. This article, however, will focus on individual lashes.

What is individual lash removal? As the name suggests, it removes your client's grown-out or damaged individual lash extensions. It may seem simple at first, but it requires meticulous attention.

How long do individual lash extensions last? It depends on the client's natural lash growth and lash extension health. When applied and taken care of properly, they will last longer. The best way to keep lashes healthy and pretty is to book lash fill-ins every 2–3 weeks.

There are two ways to remove individual lash extensions.

The Banana Peel Method

This method is ideal for clients with strong natural lashes. It involves squeezing the natural lash and peeling off a layer of it.

Pros
It's quick and simple when the adhesive is brittle. Typically, the lash adhesive loses elasticity after 5–7 weeks, causing them to turn into an acrylic texture and become brittle. This makes it easier to peel the extension off the natural lash.

Cons
This procedure will be challenging if the lash glue is still strong. The strain of peeling might damage your client's natural lashes. It may also leave old adhesive on a natural lash, causing the new lash extensions you'll apply to adhere poorly.

Primary Tools You’ll Need
• Isolation tweezer
• Application tweezer

Step-by-Step Procedure
1. Find and pick a lash with a lash extension that has grown significantly.
2. Tightly grab the top or bottom of the natural lash using your isolation tweezer.
3. Peel the lash extension off the natural lash using your application tweezer.

The Debonder Method

This method uses liquid to remove individual lash extensions.

Pros
It's a better alternative to banana peel because it doesn't require you to squeeze the lashes hard and peel a layer off them.

Cons
You have to be careful not to get the liquid into your client's eyes because it may cause an intense burning sensation. If you're still a beginner, only apply the debonder method with the guidance of a lash expert.

Primary Tools You Need
• Debonder
• Application tweezer

Step-by-Step Procedure
1. Dip your application tweezer into a small amount of debonder.
2. Remove extra liquid on the exterior surface (if any) and ensure nothing drips from the tweezer.
3. Grab the lash extension. Hold it for a few seconds until it finally comes off.
4. Repeat if it still doesn't fall off.

Lash Aftercare Tips

Aside from proper lash extension removal and application, educating your clients about aftercare is essential. This helps maintain the health and look of their lash extension set.

Make sure to give them the following advice:
1. Avoid getting your lashes wet 4–6 hours after the service. Avoid saunas, facial steam, and fire as well.
2. Skip mascara and oil-based products.
3. Use lash shampoo daily to clean your lashes. If you wear makeup, remove it with a cleansing wand and water-based makeup remover, followed by the lash shampoo.
4. Dry your face with a sponge or fibre-free towel to avoid the lashes being pulled off prematurely.
5. Brush your lashes regularly, especially after washing your face.
6. Don't rub your eyes, sleep on your face, or try pulling on your lashes.
7. Book refills every 2–3 weeks.
